Warn XP
Warn XP

This Warn 9.5XP winch has seen better days.

The motor housing (bearing support) has been sealed with a bitumen adhesive making the motor unserviceable for periodic inspection and cleaning.

Transfer Box Input Gear
Transfer Box Input Gear

Nasty! A closer look at a transfer box input gear. These teeth are rendered virtually useless.

A cross drilled input gear would not have ended up like this. Pic underneath is what it should look like.

What happens when you hit a pheasant at 60 mph!

Brake issues

My brakes seem to be rattling!

CHECK YOUR COVERS!
CHECK YOUR COVERS!

The Inspection Cover from the front Pump Shaft was missing on this vehicle which caused the gear to seize and rust on the pump.

So save yourself some time and hassle and check your covers!

Winch maintenance
Winch maintenance

If you submerge your winch while offroad you should have your motor and gearbox removed and serviced or else it will end up like this.

Safety

Very dangerous - very scary!

Please keep an eye on your tyre treads.

Spring Dislocation Cones
Spring Dislocation Cones

The spring totally dislocated whilst off roading - note where the tyre has been rubbing against the top coil. This would not have happened if a pair of rear dislocation cones had been fitted.

Transfer Box
Transfer Box

Nasty noises were coming from the transfer box, so a quick inspection revealed parts of a bearing cage which had collapsed along with lots of swarf! Further investigation revealed the gear box out put shaft had lost most of the metal off of the splines that engage into the transfer box input gear. On removal of the transfer box input gear, it was found that it was an early type of input gear which was not cross drilled which prevented sufficient lubrication. A replacement cross drilled gear will cure this problem.

Transfer Box 2
Transfer Box 2

A mysterious vibration at overrun was traced to this Land Rover 110 transfer box - apparently it had been in a shunt a couple of years ago!
